St. Mary’s School in Niger State Hit by Predawn Attack, Students and Staff Abducted

Authorities have confirmed a far higher number of victims in the predawn attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State. According to new verified information shared by community sources and local authorities, 303 students and 12 teachers or staff members, totalling 315 abductees, were taken during the assault.

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora had earlier stated that armed attackers invaded the school between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. on 21 November, abducting pupils, students and teachers, while a security personnel was shot during the incident.

Niger State Police have now confirmed the attack and say a coordinated joint rescue operation involving security agencies, community leaders and government authorities is underway.

The Diocese condemned the attack, expressing deep concern for the victims and their families, and urged residents to remain calm while security forces carry out rescue operations. It also reaffirmed its commitment to providing verified updates as authorities release more details.

Authorities continue to warn against unverified speculation as rescue and intelligence efforts intensify.
