A Lithuanian court has sentenced a 19-year-old man after he pleaded guilty to setting fire to an IKEA store on instructions linked to Russia’s security services. According to prosecutors, the teenager admitted he was approached online, recruited, and guided through encrypted channels to carry out the arson attack in exchange for payment.

The incident, which took place earlier this year, caused damage to part of the store but resulted in no casualties due to a swift evacuation. Investigators traced digital communications that connected the teen’s actions to individuals believed to be working for or cooperating with Russian intelligence networks. Authorities say the attack fits a broader pattern in which Russian operatives attempt to destabilise European nations through low-cost disruptions carried out by vulnerable recruits.

Lithuania’s security agencies have repeatedly warned that Russia is expanding hybrid tactics across the Baltics, targeting critical infrastructure, commercial centres, and public institutions. The teen’s guilty plea allowed prosecutors to fast-track the case, with officials emphasising the need to deter similar attempts in the future.

The conviction comes amid growing concerns across Europe that Moscow is leaning more heavily on covert sabotage campaigns as political tensions with the West escalate. Lithuanian officials reiterated that any threats linked to foreign intelligence networks will face the country’s highest level of scrutiny and prosecution.
