Paystack Suspends Co-Founder Ezra Olubi After Misconduct Allegation Sparks Investigation

Paystack, one of Africa’s most influential fintech companies, has suspended its co-founder and chief technology officer Ezra Olubi following an allegation of sexual misconduct involving a subordinate. The claim surfaced on social media on November 12 and prompted immediate scrutiny across the Nigerian tech ecosystem.

The company confirmed the suspension on Thursday, stating that a formal investigation is underway. Paystack, acquired by Stripe in 2020, said it would not provide further comment until the review is complete, citing respect for those involved and a need to preserve procedural integrity.

The allegation has also revived online attention on several decade-old tweets posted by Olubi between 2009 and 2013. The resurfaced posts, which contain explicit language and inappropriate references about colleagues and minors, went viral on X on Thursday and intensified public reaction. Olubi has not publicly responded and has since deactivated his X account.

Paystack’s leadership emphasized that the matter is being handled in line with its internal standards. “We take matters of this nature extremely seriously. Effective immediately, Ezra has been suspended from all duties and responsibilities pending the outcome of a formal investigation,” the company said in a statement.

The situation comes at a tense moment for Africa’s tech ecosystem, where recent cases involving workplace misconduct have triggered wider discussions about accountability, culture, and governance. Industry observers note that the sector’s rapid growth has not shielded it from the same structural challenges faced by traditional corporations.

Founded in 2015, Paystack became one of Africa’s most globally recognized startups and remains a vital part of Stripe’s Africa strategy. The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe workplace as the investigation continues.

This remains a developing story.
