PDP Dissolves Party Structures in Rivers, Enugu, Imo, Abia and Akwa Ibom
The Peoples Democratic Party moved into full restructuring mode on Saturday, announcing the dissolution of all party organs in five southern states, a sweeping decision that signals a major reset ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
The resolution, approved at the party’s national convention in Abuja, affects Rivers, Enugu, Imo, Abia and Akwa Ibom. Delegates were informed that all existing executives and committees at the ward, local government and state levels have been formally disbanded.
Party leaders framed the move as necessary to rebuild internal cohesion and address escalating factional disputes, particularly in states where prolonged crises have weakened the PDP’s organisational strength. The decision comes as the party grapples with widening internal fractures, contested loyalties and the need to reclaim political ground lost in recent national and subnational contests.
Members familiar with the discussions said the dissolution is part of a wider reform agenda aimed at unifying warring blocs and resetting the PDP’s political machinery ahead of off-season elections and the next general election cycle. Fresh caretaker committees will be announced in the coming days to steer the affected states until new congresses are conducted.
The shake-up is expected to trigger significant political ripples, especially in Rivers State, where intense internal battles have dominated national headlines for months. Similar tensions have simmered in Enugu and Imo, while party structures in Abia and Akwa Ibom have faced sustained criticism from local stakeholders.
PDP officials said the party is determined to rebuild from the ground up and reassert itself as a cohesive national political force. The reforms are likely to shape new alliances, redraw internal power maps and test the party’s ability to stabilise before major national political contests.
