Tanko Al-Makura Calls for Renewed National Unity in Nigeria Amid Rising Political Tensions

Nigeria’s former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, has called for a renewed national commitment to unity and civic responsibility, urging citizens and leaders to prioritise cohesion at a time of rising political and economic strain. Speaking during an engagement with community groups, Al-Makura said Nigeria’s long-term stability depends on collective effort rather than partisan divides.

He argued that the country’s persistent challenges, from insecurity to deepening social fragmentation, require a national mindset that goes beyond ethnic or religious identity. According to him, a stronger civic culture is essential for strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding the future of younger generations.

Al-Makura also stressed that unity cannot be achieved through rhetoric alone. He called for practical steps, including more inclusive governance, better citizen engagement, and a renewed commitment to peace across communities. “Nation-building is not a duty for leaders alone,” he noted, urging Nigerians to contribute to a more stable and prosperous society.

His remarks come as Nigeria faces heightened political tension and growing public frustration over economic hardship. Analysts say his message reflects increasing concern among senior statesmen that national cohesion is weakening at a dangerous pace.

As the country prepares for critical political and economic decisions in the coming months, Al-Makura’s call adds to the chorus of voices warning that Nigeria’s success hinges on a unified front, not fractured interests.
