Cris Cyborg's PFL featherweight championship will not be contested after Ketlen Vieira missed weight by seven pounds on the eve of their fight in Tampa. Vieira stepped on the scales at 152lbs for a bout scheduled at 145lb, putting Saturday's title fight at risk of cancellation. Promoters and teams agreed to a catchweight, allowing the fight to go ahead while removing the belt from the equation.
The decision preserves the event but changes the stakes. Cyborg, 41, made the championship limit and will keep her title out of play. She reacted on social media, posting, "We don't care. Porrada." The MMA legend had suggested the fight could be her last after a 21-year career with world titles in Strikeforce, Bellator, the UFC and the PFL, comments that now land on a bout that will not deliver a title transfer even if she loses.
Cyborg told ESPN Brasil she feared the fight might be scrapped after learning on Friday morning that her opponent was going to miss weight. "I believe Pederneiras' team is very professional and I'm not here to judge them, but she fought at 135lb, moved up to 145lb, and fought in May [in the UFC]," Cyborg said. "I think they were going to cancel the fight and everything, but there was a conversation to make sure the fight wouldn't get cancelled, and they reached a catchweight agreement. I'm happy that I made weight. I'm really happy that the fight is going to happen."
Vieira, 34, explained to MMA Fighting that a medical episode prevented her from finishing the weight cut and that she will surrender part of her purse as a result. "I had severe pain in my kidneys and stomach since last night. I felt really sick throughout the entire night. Master 'Dede' [coach Andre Pederneiras] slept in my bed with me, massaging my back so I could get some sleep," she said. "This morning, I felt sick again and had another severe episode. I can't explain why this happened. I was doing well on weight, I'm a bantamweight fighter, and it had nothing to do with my weight. I was in a lot of pain, and [my coach] wouldn't let me continue losing weight. I was doing well and sweating properly, but then I had this very severe episode, and [my coach] chose to prioritise my health."
The catchweight resolution keeps the card intact and penalises Vieira financially, while Cyborg avoids losing her belt on Saturday. The fight will proceed as planned in Tampa, with both fighters answering now to immediate scrutiny over health and weight management rather than a title change.
