Lancashire remain a victory away from the top three after they chased down 224 to beat Hampshire by four wickets, keeping their Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockout hopes alive.
The scoreboard read Lancashire 224 for 6, with Emma Lamb 68 and Seren Smale 42 not out. Hampshire finished on 223, Abi Norgrove 70 not out and Freya Kemp 61, while Kate Cross finished with 4-33.
Cross entered the match on the back of an announcement that she will end her 21-year association with Lancashire and Emirates Old Trafford teams at the end of this season. In her first game after that reveal, the 102-time international ripped through Hampshire’s top order. Her opening five overs returned 3 for 15, and she ended with 4-33, the best figures she has recorded in this campaign.
Hampshire had been set up by a brisk 61 from Kemp, who faced 54 deliveries and found power through the leg side, and early contributions from Rhianna Southby. When both fell, Norgrove anchored the innings, compiling 70, her fourth half-century of this One-Day Cup season, and taking the total to a defensible 223.
Lamb paced Lancashire’s reply with a controlled 68, her third score above fifty in the competition, while the chase as a whole was measured and kept wickets in hand. Eve Jones extended an obstinate 16 from 45 balls before her dismissal, Gaby Lewis was trapped leg before by Amanda-Jade Wellington, and when Lamb finally miscued a scoop, Lancashire required calm finishing. A brief interruption occurred after the outfield sprinklers activated, but play resumed and Smale negotiated the closing overs with a nerveless 42 to seal the win.
Because Durham lost to Somerset earlier, Hampshire could have locked in at least an Eliminator place with a different result, but must wait for other outcomes. Lancashire have strung together a third straight victory since the Hundred break and remain on the coattails of the chasing pack, one more success from forcing their way into the top three.
