McGregor says his comeback starts now after knee surgery, positioning himself to return to competition despite a stoppage loss and mounting off-ring controversies. The 38-year-old posted on Instagram, "Surgery done. Knee repaired," and added, "The doubters can keep talking. I didn't run from the pain, I walked straight into it. Now the real work begins. Comeback season starts now. No shortcuts. No excuses. Just the will to rise again."
The injury occurred in McGregor's brief return at UFC 329 last month, when his scheduled fight with Max Holloway ended after just 69 seconds. Observers saw McGregor's knee appear to give way as he missed with his first attempted roundhouse kick in the opening seconds, and Holloway was declared the winner by technical knockout.
In an accompanying video, McGregor cited other athletes who recovered from serious setbacks as inspiration, naming two-time UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, two-division champion Georges St-Pierre and seven-time Super Bowl-winner Tom Brady. "These are my motivation here, especially the fighting boys," he said. "My mindset is unstoppable, unbreakable."
The latest setback follows a previous, high-profile injury when McGregor broke his leg in a defeat by Dustin Poirier in 2021. That history frames both the physical challenge ahead and the optics of any future ring return.
Separately, critics have questioned whether McGregor still merits the spotlight after legal and regulatory problems. In November 2024, Nikita Hand won her claim against him for damages for assault by rape in a civil case. McGregor also accepted an 18-month ban for violating the UFC's anti-doping policy after missing three drugs tests within a 12-month period in 2024. The ban was backdated to the third missed test in September 2024 and concluded in March.
McGregor's public resolve sets the terms of his next phase, but returning to the octagon will depend on medical progress and how promoters, regulators and the sport's audience respond. For now, he has framed recovery as the immediate task and cast his return as inevitable.
