What changes? The Marvel series VisionQuest will reach screens without generative AI in its production, its creator says, keeping creative work in human hands. Terry Matalas has confirmed that the Disney+ spinoff will not rely on GenAI tools because, in his view, there was no operational need for them. "No, not at all. There hasn't really been a need," Matalas said.

That decision shaped how the show handled its central theme. Matalas added that the project’s visual language intentionally references contemporary AI processing as a narrative device. "All the designs nod to how our current form of AI processes things... That felt like a fun way for us to comment on it," he said, signalling that the series will portray AI aesthetics through deliberate design choices rather than machine-generated assets.

Production designer Will Hughes-Jones described the team’s approach as a human effort to reproduce the imperfect, algorithm-like quality often associated with AI renders. Rather than outsource those effects to generative systems, designers and craftspeople built the look in-camera and in post, according to the production account.

VisionQuest follows the resurrected android Vision, played by Paul Bettany, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery aided by AI personas embedded in his programming, while a bounty is placed on his head. The series is set after the events of WandaVision, and it will debut on Disney+ on Oct. 14.

The production choice comes amid wider industry debates about AI and intellectual property. In May, Disney ended a $1 billion investment in OpenAI's Sora, a move that halted plans to use Disney's character catalogue inside a text-to-video application. For VisionQuest, the creative team’s rejection of generative tools turns the show’s AI subject matter into a prompt for hands-on design work rather than an argument for automation.

Next: the series arrives on Disney+ Oct. 14, and its reception will test whether audiences and critics take the deliberate, human-crafted depiction of AI as a successful creative strategy.
