Attention is limited, yet digital services are built to compete for it throughout the day. Notifications, autoplay, recommendations and personalised feeds can help people find information, stay connected and return to useful content. They can also make stopping more difficult than starting.
The result is not always a deliberate choice to spend more time online. Often, one interaction leads quietly into another. A notification invites a response, a recommendation offers something else to watch or read, and an automatically refreshed feed makes the next piece of content immediately available. These features can make continued engagement feel routine.
This does not mean that all digital activity should be viewed in the same way. The World Health Organization’s work on digital environments and youth well-being makes an important distinction: the question is not simply how long someone uses a device.
What matters is what people encounter online, what the system asks of them and whether they retain meaningful control over their time. A person using a digital tool to learn, work or maintain relationships is not necessarily having the same experience as someone repeatedly drawn into an endless feed.
That distinction shifts the discussion away from screen time alone. It asks whether digital systems are helping users do what they intended to do, or whether they are constantly encouraging them to remain engaged beyond that purpose.
The battle for attention is therefore a design question as much as an individual one. Platforms make decisions about how alerts are delivered, how content is ranked and how easily users can understand why a particular post, video or recommendation has appeared before them.
Those choices can support control. A platform can make it simple to pause, manage notifications and understand why content is being recommended. It can give users clearer ways to decide what they see and when they see it.
But design can also make the next interaction feel automatic. When content is continuously presented, alerts are frequent and recommendations are difficult to understand, users may find that their attention is being directed by the system rather than by their own priorities.
These choices shape the rhythm of daily life. They influence when people check their phones, how long they remain on a service and how much space is left for other activities. Because attention shapes what people see, share, buy and believe, the way it is captured also has wider consequences.
The response should not be nostalgia for an offline past. Digital networks support learning, work and relationships, and many of their features are useful. The task is not to reject digital life, but to ask more clearly what kind of digital environment people should be using.
A healthier information environment would treat attention as something to protect, not merely something to capture. That would mean clearer controls, more transparent recommendation systems and a stronger expectation that products should serve a user’s goals rather than endlessly extend engagement.
