McIlroy rallied with a five-under 65, birdieing four of the last six holes to climb back into contention after a second-round 69 erased his early lead. He acknowledged the uneven patchwork of his game across the week, saying, "I needed to be patient the last three days, because my game has been good in parts, but then it has been a struggle in other ways." He added, "I didn't hit my first fairway today until the 10th hole." McIlroy credited his short game and late momentum, "Playing this golf course from the rough isn't fun, but I hung in there, my short game saved me a couple of times and I got some momentum coming in." He concluded with the assessment that the chase will demand uncommon performance, "I am in a good spot in terms of where I am at on the leaderboard, but it's going to take a heroic effort from one of us to catch Wyndham."
Clark recovered strongly after a double-bogey at the opening hole. He birdied twice and eagled the eighth to turn at two under, then birdied four of the next five holes before dropping a shot at the 18th. The sequence produced his five-shot cushion over McIlroy and Cantlay, who remain the principal threats on the leaderboard.
Americans Chris Gotterup and Gary Woodland sit on 11 under, with Collin Morikawa on 10 under and Im Sung-Jae on nine under. A group at five under includes Scotland's Robert MacIntyre and world number one Scottie Scheffler, both of whom closed with 68s. England's Aaron Rai and Matthew Fitzpatrick are one stroke further back at four under. Justin Rose's 73 left him on one under, while Tommy Fleetwood's 74 put him at two over.
With the tournament set after three rounds, Clark enters the final round in a position of control. The chasing group must combine error-free golf with a high number of birdies if anyone is to overhaul Clark's five-shot lead.
