Mason Jones's gamble to leave the UFC has changed his career trajectory, he returned in 2025 and is now riding a seven-fight winning streak. The 31-year-old reached that point after a painful choice in 2022, when he declined to re-sign following a stint in which he won one of four fights inside the organisation, lost two and had one no-contest. Jones went back to Cage Warriors, where he had previously been a two-weight champion, and committed to rebuilding his game away from the UFC spotlight.
The decision came at a cost. "The dream is absolutely not dead for me," Jones said, and he told BBC Wales the process left him financially strained. "I chose to leave [UFC]. I went back and I rebuilt everything I needed. It cost me a stupid amount of money, put me in debt at my eyeballs," he said. He described reassuring his partner that the short-term sacrifice would pay off, and he leaned on family history for resolve.
"Welsh people are well known to be resilient, we've been through it all," Jones told BBC Wales, invoking his grandfather's background as a miner and the need to "pick yourself up by the bootstraps and scrap on." Those values framed his approach as he stitched together four successive wins in Cage Warriors, a streak that reopened the door to the UFC.
The second return has yielded clearer rewards. During this stint Jones has collected a Fight of the Night bonus and a Performance of the Night bonus, and he says the additional pay has changed his life. "Well, I bought a house," he said, smiling, and added that he paid off the debts accumulated during the two years he spent largely without income. He also told BBC Wales he is beginning to earn a regular salary each year outside fight purses.
With the immediate financial strain resolved and a sequence of finishes behind him, Jones says he is focused on the next steps inside the Octagon. "The goals are there, the mindset is on point, it's just going out there and just putting this guy away," he told BBC Wales, framing his comeback as a deliberate push toward higher targets in his division.
