Former Wales striker Iwan Roberts said Parkinson was "probably under pressure" for the first time since taking charge. Roberts praised Parkinson's previous achievements at the club but criticised his tactical rigidity, saying "he's quite stubborn in his way, in his tactics, he doesn't like to change," and that the manager often keeps the same shape late in games rather than reshaping the defence and adding an extra attacker.
Parkinson himself described the goals conceded to Birmingham as "two of the softest goals" of his time in charge, underlining his frustration with the defensive lapses. Roberts warned these problems are not new, calling defence "the Achilles heel last season," and adding that "the reason they didn't get into the play-offs, is they had the sixth worst defensive record in that league". He also highlighted a worrying home statistic, noting that only bottom club Sheffield Wednesday conceded more goals at home than Wrexham last season.
Roberts also questioned squad construction, pointing out that Wrexham were heavy spenders last summer and that recruitment has continued. "Wrexham were the highest spenders last summer and I think there's only four clubs that have spent more this summer, and he's still on about bringing more players in," he said. He warned that a large roster can create its own problems, adding, "A squad of 33 players, I think that's too much. I think that in itself can cause you problems."
The combination of fragile defending, tactical caution late in matches, and a bloated squad leaves Parkinson exposed if results do not improve. The coming fixtures and any transfer activity will be watched closely by fans and the club hierarchy as the manager seeks to halt a worrying start to the season.
