The hosts amassed 441 in their only innings, a total powered by Tom Lammonby’s 95, and then saw Jack Leach, Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory share the wickets that wrapped up Glamorgan’s reply. Leach finished with 3-46, Overton 3-29 and Gregory 3-68 as the Welsh side were bowled out for 183 in their second innings, leaving Somerset with 23 points from the match to Glamorgan’s three.
Glamorgan resumed on the third morning at 30 for one but never recovered. Kiran Carlson, the visitors’ captain, fell quickly for a duck when he nicked a forward defensive push off Migael Pretorius and James Rew took the edge. Ben Kellaway added another early scalp, edging Overton to a third-slip catch that James Rew held.
Asa Tribe top scored in the innings with 49 and Sean Dickson made 47, but their efforts could not prevent a slide. Colin Ingram survived a run-out scare when Leach missed the stumps at the bowler’s end, but the left-arm spinner later induced an edge from Tribe that Overton pouched at first slip. Ingram then feathered a defensive shot through to Rew, and the scoreboard read 81 for five, leaving Glamorgan needing 166 more to avoid an innings defeat.
Dickson and Chris Cooke added some resistance after lunch, nudging the total past the half-century stand, but Cooke’s attempted hook off Overton ended in Josh Thomas’s hands at fine leg. Dan Douthwaite was then trapped lbw by Leach for a first-ball duck. Dickson’s 74-ball stay finished when he sliced at a wide Gregory delivery and Tom Abell took a two-handed catch at second slip. With the score at 150 for eight, Somerset closed the innings by bowling Connor O’Riordan and then having Timm van der Gugten caught at cover, the match concluding at 14:40 BST.
Glamorgan coach Richard Dawson said, "It was a tough two and a half days against a good side high in confidence. They put us under pressure from the first morning and we struggled to get back into it." He added that individual performances from Tribe, Dickson and Kellaway showed some confidence, but ultimately Glamorgan were outplayed by a side now firmly in the title hunt.
The result intensifies the scramble for the County Championship crown, increasing the burden on Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire as Somerset press for a first ever title.
