Cris Cyborg appears set to continue her fighting career after edging Ketlen Vieira on the judges' scorecards at PFL Tampa in Florida. The unanimous decision gave the 41-year-old her 30th career victory, and she signalled no immediate retirement, despite failing to secure a dominant finish against a heavier opponent.
The five-round bout played out as a close, physical contest. Vieira, who missed weight and was therefore ineligible to claim the PFL featherweight title, maintained a steady pace and landed heavy hooks that briefly rocked Cyborg late in the second round. All three judges scored the fight for Cyborg, but the champion did not produce the decisive performance that some expected from a fighter with a decorated 21-year MMA career and a near eight-year unbeaten run on her record.
After the result, Cyborg made clear she plans to keep testing herself. "I'm ready for anybody," she said. "Eight years undefeated. I'm ready for anybody. Any time, any weight." She resumed a long-running call for a crossover matchup with boxing's Claressa Shields, asserting "Claressa Shields, the girl is scared to fight me. You're scared." She also contrasted the two fighters, saying, "[Vieira] has more heart than you."
Cyborg, who holds a 6-0 professional boxing record, again referenced Shields' recent move up in weight, noting Shields has "been campaigning at heavyweight recently but last fought at middleweight," and urged her to "eat less" so they could meet at middleweight. The Brazilian also targeted former PFL lightweight champion Kayla Harrison, who now competes in the UFC, asking "Kayla Harrison is here? Come here," and adding "I'm ready for you. I hope you heal your neck and you go challenge Amanda Nunes. I'm here." The fighter is a free agent in MMA following the win.
Vieira, 34, suffered the sixth defeat of her career and opened her PFL account with the weight miss and the loss. On the Tampa undercard, Briton Luke Trainer produced a highlight stoppage, flooring Roland Dunlap with a front kick to the face before the referee halted the contest in the second round. Trainer, 30, recorded his sixth consecutive victory and 11th overall. Wins also went to Afghan-born Englishman Javid Basharat and Irish welterweight Eoin Sheridan at the Benchmark International Arena.
Cyborg's decision win preserves her profile and leaves several clear paths forward: she can chase the crossover bout with Shields, press for high-profile MMA matchups such as Kayla Harrison, or pursue other options as a free agent. For Ketlen Vieira, the result and the weight miss compound an already difficult night that will require a response in future fights.
