At least 16 people were killed when a bus crashed on Egypt's Red Sea coast on Wednesday morning, the health ministry said, leaving another 28 injured.
The vehicle went off the road on the route linking the Red Sea towns of Dahab and Nuweiba in the South Sinai governorate, officials added. As many as 20 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to give first aid and evacuate the wounded.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, the ministry said. The stretch where the accident occurred is part of a popular tourist corridor that attracts visitors from around the world.
Road deaths are a persistent problem across Egypt. Authorities reported nearly 6,000 fatalities in 2025, and such accidents are frequently blamed on reckless driving and poor road maintenance.
The crash follows another deadly collision last month, when two lorries collided in the north-eastern Ismailia governorate, killing 18 people and injuring 30.
Emergency services moved quickly to treat and remove casualties, but details about the passengers and whether they were tourists or locals have not been released. With the cause still unclear, the incident adds to a string of high-casualty road crashes that have raised public concern about safety on Egypt's highways and coastal routes.
