Tokito Oda's bid to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam collapsed as Alfie Hewett beat the Japanese top seed 6-0 7-6 (7-5) to claim a fifth US Open men's wheelchair singles title. The victory gives Hewett his 11th Grand Slam singles crown and prevented Oda from completing a clean sweep of the majors in 2026.
The 28-year-old Briton added the singles crown after already winning the doubles title alongside Gordon Reid on Friday. Hewett has now taken the US Open singles trophy five times, adding to previous wins in 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023.
Hewett arrived in New York having lost to Oda in the finals at both the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year, including a 6-1 6-1 defeat at SW19 where he won just two games. Hewett said that loss had forced him to "look in the mirror" and prompted a period of reflection in which he wanted to "be a little bit more like me." He added that he was known for being "just as fearless, brave and courageous in big moments" and that he felt he had been "a shell of myself" at Wimbledon.
On court in the final Hewett produced a dominant opening set after saving a break point in the opening game and finishing the opener with a backhand return winner he described as "possessed." The second set required a tie-break after Hewett recovered from a double break down and saved three set points that would have allowed Oda to level the match.
Oda, who had won the past six Grand Slam singles titles and took the Australian Open in January, acknowledged his failed bid on court, saying, "Definitely I was trying to get the calendar year [Grand Slam] this year. This was the last part of it so it's really tough for me, but I think Alfie deserved it today."
Hewett's win ends Oda's run of major dominance this year and consolidates the Briton's place among the sport's most successful singles players. The immediate outcome is Hewett's 11th major singles title and the denial of a full-year sweep for Oda.
