Matteo Guendouzi will miss European matches after Uefa handed the Fenerbahce midfielder a four-match ban, with two of those games suspended, and fined him 50,000 euros following a post-match brawl at Lyon. The sanctions follow Fenerbahce's play-off victory that sent them through to the Champions League group stage with a 3-2 aggregate win.
Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce's English striker, received a one-match suspended ban and a 30,000 euro fine, both measures subject to a probationary period of one year. Lyon's goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira was given a five-match ban, two of those suspended, after Uefa described his conduct as "serious assault." Uefa also fined both clubs 50,000 euros each for team conduct breaches.
Uefa's disciplinary statement said Guendouzi was penalised for insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and violating rules of decent conduct. Greenwood was found to have violated rules of decent conduct. Video footage circulating after the game showed tensions on the pitch and a larger melee in the tunnel as players and staff from both sides clashed.
Guendouzi, who played for Marseille between 2021 and 2024, had been repeatedly booed by Lyon supporters during the match and was seen gesturing towards sections of the crowd. After the scuffle he was filmed shouting "Allez l'OM" at a pitchside camera, a reference to Marseille. Speaking to reporters after the match, Guendouzi said he felt "disrespected" by Lyon fans who were taunting him with "insults" about his family. He added, "If we can't celebrate the way we want afterward, I find that disappointing."
The suspensions carry immediate consequences for match availability in European competition, while the suspended elements and probationary conditions leave both players at risk of further sanctions for any repeat behaviour during the next year. The fines and bans close a disciplinary chapter that accompanies Fenerbahce's progression to the Champions League group stage.
