Joy-Lance Mickels can make history for Rwanda when he leads Sabah into the Champions League group stage at Old Trafford, a moment that transforms a personal dream into national first. The 32-year-old, a lifelong Manchester United supporter, is expected to start the tie and would become the first player to represent Rwanda in the competition proper.
Mickels said he follows United whenever he can and called the draw the best his team could have received, adding that stepping onto the Old Trafford pitch will be a proud moment. He emphasised that Sabah are not travelling simply to enjoy the occasion, they intend to compete and represent Azerbaijan well.
Sabah, based in Masazir about 16km north‑west of Baku, reach the Champions League on their debut after navigating four two‑leg qualifying ties. Mickels played a key role in that run, scoring four goals in qualifying and finding the net in each round, including the strike that sealed a 6-4 aggregate victory over Hapoel Be'er Sheva after a 94th‑minute goal pushed the play-off into extra time. He also contributed 19 goals as Sabah won their first Azerbaijan Premier League title last season.
Mickels qualifies for Rwanda through his parents and made his international debut for the Wasps in March. He said representing his country while playing in Europe’s top club competition is very special and hopes his path will inspire young Rwandan players to aim high with belief, hard work and patience.
The club was founded nine years ago and now face a group of high-profile opponents, with home fixtures to include Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona, and an away meeting with Arsenal. Because Sabah’s home ground does not meet UEFA regulations, their Champions League home matches are expected to be staged at the Olympic Stadium in Baku. Manager Valdas Dambrauskas, who has his own uncommon backstory, has steered the squad to this milestone and the players say they will try to make it difficult for opponents and collect points wherever possible.
