One person died and several houses were destroyed after a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds struck Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State on the night of Monday, September 7. The storm hit between 11:30pm and midnight and damaged parts of Shanga town, ’Yar Besse and surrounding communities, leaving multiple residents with ruined homes and lost property.
The toll and the scope of damage were disclosed on Tuesday in a statement from Abubakar Aliyu Shanga, Special Adviser to the Kebbi State Governor on New Media. The statement said the late-night rain and gusts caused significant destruction in the affected communities, including the collapse of several houses and the loss of household goods and other property.
Local officials moved to the area to evaluate the impact. Abdullahi Abdullahi Mai Anguwa, chairman of Shanga Local Government Area, visited the communities to assess the damage and speak with residents. The chairman is expected to compile his findings and present a report to the Kebbi State governor, a step that will determine any immediate official response.
Residents in the damaged neighbourhoods face an immediate need for shelter and repairs after structures gave way during the storm. The timing of the event, late at night, increased the vulnerability of occupants and complicated initial rescue and assessment efforts. The authorities have not released casualty figures beyond the single confirmed death, nor have they provided an inventory of homes affected.
The coming days should clarify the full human and material cost and whether the state government will mobilise relief or reconstruction support following the chairman’s report. For now, affected families remain where the damage occurred and local officials are gathering details to inform next steps.
