The Premier League will permit the use of audio from on-field conversations between players and referees during live broadcasts for the first time this season. This move is part of an expansion of the RefCam system, which was introduced last season as a permanent feature of top-flight coverage. The RefCam system, which uses head-mounted cameras to provide near-instant replays of match incidents from a new angle, will now include limited audio from these conversations. The audio will be used during near-live instant replays, with one or two incidents to be broadcast from each of the Premier League's 38 match rounds.

The decision to include audio from RefCam is a significant development in the Premier League's broadcasting approach. Previously, the audio captured by the RefCams was not televised until several days later, due to regulations that prohibited its use during live broadcasts. However, the Premier League has relaxed these regulations, allowing for the limited use of RefCam audio during live matches. The audio will not be broadcast live, and will not include any incidents that are referred to the video assistant referee, as this is not permitted under the laws of the game.

The introduction of RefCam audio is part of a broader effort by the Premier League to enhance the viewer experience and to replicate broadcasting innovations from other sports. Football has been slow to adopt these innovations, but is now under pressure from rights holders to open up. The Premier League and refereeing body Pro Ref are both lobbying the International Football Association Board (Ifab) to relax the rules that prevent live audio from being broadcast. The number of TV games featuring RefCam will increase from 20 to about 45, and the new audio offering will be made available as part of near-live instant replays.

The use of RefCam audio is a significant step forward for the Premier League, and is likely to enhance the viewing experience for fans. The ability to hear conversations between players and referees will provide greater insight into the game, and will allow fans to better understand the decisions made by referees. The Premier League's decision to include RefCam audio is a positive development, and is likely to be welcomed by fans and rights holders alike.
