Aryna Sabalenka kept her bid for a fourth consecutive US Open final alive after coming from behind to beat sixth seed Linda Noskova in three sets, extending her unbeaten run at Flushing Meadows to 19 matches and advancing to a sixth successive semi-final.
The Story in Pictures
Sabalenka, the two-time defending champion, looked on the ropes after falling 4-2 in the deciding set and then 2-0 down in the tie-break, but she won the next three games to force the breaker and recovered to close out the match in a little under two and a half hours. She completed the victory with a second-serve ace to finish a tie-break run that now stretches to 10 consecutive US Open tie-break wins dating back to 2021.
The top seed struggled at moments, producing four double faults and failing to convert several break-point opportunities, including a double fault that cost her serve late in the first set and another that surrendered a break in the second. Noskova, the reigning Wimbledon champion, hit more winners and fewer unforced errors and saved seven of nine break points, but she could not stop Sabalenka’s late surge. The defeat ends Noskova’s run of 11 straight Grand Slam singles wins.
After the match Sabalenka said, "I'm speechless right now. I was pushing to the limit in this match, especially in the third set. I honestly thought that that's it, the match is over, but probably that's what helped me to feel loose and go after my shots. [I'm] super happy to get the win." The victory was only her second Grand Slam quarter-final win since March, a reminder that her early-season hard-court form, which included titles in Brisbane, Indian Wells and Miami, has been harder to sustain across the rest of the season.
Sabalenka will next face either American third seed Jessica Pegula or compatriot Emma Navarro, seeded 26th. The win allows her to retain the world number one ranking for now, though she will be replaced at the top regardless of her remaining results in the tournament if world number two Elena Rybakina beats Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday.
