The Anambra State Police Command issued a press release through its spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, condemning the attacks and appealing for public cooperation to identify the assailants. The statement said control room entries and eyewitness reports guided the initial response.
Police said preliminary information indicates three unidentified people travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla carried out the shootings at separate locations in Awka. The vehicle’s registration number remains unconfirmed, the command added. Officers deployed patrol teams to the affected areas as soon as they received distress reports.
Both victims were taken to hospital where medical staff pronounced them dead. One victim has not been identified, the other was named as Aiza Nwosu, described in the statement as a popular personality in Awka. Investigators recovered N7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers at the scenes.
Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama condemned the killings, calling them unacceptable and a direct affront to the state’s peace and security. The CP has directed that the investigation be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID Awka, for discreet and comprehensive probing.
Police said patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering have been intensified across Awka and adjoining areas while detectives work to trace the suspects. The command urged residents to assist with any information that could lead to the perpetrators’ arrest.
