Support for Northampton Saints is fracturing as Henry Pollock refuses to sign a renewal, prolonging a high-profile negotiation that has put salary-cap choices under fresh scrutiny. Reports that a deal worth about £400,000 a year was close have circulated, but Pollock reiterated he has not signed and remains open to other offers while his adviser Eddie Hearn pushes his case.
Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson said it would have been preferable to have settled the matter weeks ago, underlining how unusually public the talks have become. Fans and club figures acknowledge the attention Pollock has drawn to both the team and the sport, but many say the drawn-out nature of the process has irritated some supporters.
Lis Saunders, chair of the Northampton Saints Supporters Group, said she has watched Pollock rise through the academy and called him "absolutely delightful," while warning that "the theatre around it will grind people's gears." She added, "As the players themselves say, he's an idiot, but he's our idiot," describing the move of a favourite away as an emotional loss rather than a financial one for the club.
Podcasters who follow the club say opinion is split. Charles McGillivray, a host of the fan show Beneath the Lift Tower, said some casual followers respond to headlines rather than the mechanics of Premiership rugby, including the salary cap. He noted Eddie Hearn's involvement will be good for the sport but questioned how a £1m a season valuation could fit in England. Last autumn Alex Mitchell said squad togetherness and quality counted more than "mega money" when he re-signed, and this month fly-half Fin Smith momentarily backed Pollock, telling reporters "he's worth it" before adding it was partly PR.
