Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid moved into the US Open wheelchair doubles semi-finals after a straight-sets victory, keeping their pursuit of a sixth title at Flushing Meadows alive. The British top seeds defeated Stephane Houdet and Zhenxu Ji 6-3 6-1, a win that sends them through to the last four.
The pair will meet Tokito Oda and Gustavo Fernandez in the semi-finals, the duo who won the US Open doubles in 2025. Hewett, 28, and Reid, 34, arrive at the matchroom with an established partnership, having collected 25 Grand Slam doubles titles between them.
Both players are scheduled to start their singles campaigns on Wednesday, which will force them to manage energy and focus across two draws as the tournament progresses. The doubles victory in New York preserved their momentum after an opening match that they controlled from start to finish.
There was further British success in the quad wheelchair doubles on Tuesday as Andy Lapthorne and his South African partner Leon Els opened with a straight-sets win. They beat Americans David Wagner and Andrew Bogdanov 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to advance in the draw.
By contrast Greg Slade and Heath Davidson suffered a heavy defeat, losing 6-0 6-0 to the top-seeded pairing of Niels Vink and Guy Sasson. Vink and Sasson continue an extraordinary run, having won all three Grand Slam tournaments held so far in 2026 and the last six major titles in total.
The tournament now shifts focus to the semi-final match-ups and the singles opening rounds. For Hewett and Reid, the immediate test is their semi-final against Oda and Fernandez, a contest that will determine whether they can extend their record haul of majors and move within one step of a sixth US Open doubles crown.
