The American lost serve to begin the fourth set and could not rebuild momentum against a player who dominated the baseline and served with remarkable consistency.
Zverev’s serving underpinned the win. He landed 69% of his first serves and won 85% of points behind them, figures that limited Shelton’s chances in return games. The German’s two-handed backhand repeatedly blunted Shelton’s left-handed forehand, and his tactical handling of pressure moments delivered the tie-break in the second set, where he raced to a 5-0 lead and closed it out.
The victory extended Zverev’s dominance over Shelton to 6-0 in their meetings. For Shelton, the day still marked progress: at 23 he reached his first grand slam final, won a second Masters 1000 title in Toronto this summer, and rose to a career-high ranking of No 4. Yet the final also revealed areas that can be exposed by top opponents, notably his baseline consistency and returning under pressure.
The result arrives against the backdrop of a season in which injuries to leading players opened opportunities across majors. Zverev, who entered the year searching for a first major, has instead supplied consistent deep runs at slams and appears to have grown mentally with each big-match win.
Off court, Zverev’s success will remain complicated for some fans. He has been accused of physical abuse by two former girlfriends, Olya Sharypova and Brenda Patea. In June 2024 he settled an assault case in Germany that alleged he pushed and strangled Patea; a court spokesperson said, "The truth remains open." Zverev has denied those charges.
The immediate aftermath will focus on celebration in New York for Zverev and reflection for Shelton, who at 23 has clear upside despite this loss. For tennis, the final consolidates Zverev’s return to the top tier and leaves questions about the sport’s wider narratives unresolved.
