Durham moved into clear control at OurCoop County Ground in Derby, leaving the hosts 156 runs adrift with four first-innings wickets to come. The day belonged to Ben Stokes, whose return to red-ball cricket since retiring from international duty in June produced a 53 with the bat and bowling figures of 2-14.

Durham posted 283, a total that looked ever more solid after Ben Aitchison ripped through the visitors late on. Aitchison finished with 5-70 and became the first Derbyshire bowler for 61 years to take five wickets in an innings in four consecutive first-class matches. Alex Lees and Graham Clark both contributed half-centuries as Durham rebuilt after early scares.

Stokes arrived to the crease with interest high after his recent one-day form at the same ground. He struck 11 fours, reached his fifty off 56 balls and immediately made an impact with the ball, claiming a wicket with his first delivery. He pulled up during his fifth over and left the field briefly, but returned to finish the session for Durham.

Clark matched Stokes’s tempo, hitting two sixes in a 57-ball fifty and, together with Ollie Robinson, pushed Durham to 260 before the second new ball altered the dynamics. Aitchison then had Clark held at second slip to end a patient 78-run stand from 129 balls, and soon after beat Robinson’s drive to complete his haul.

Derbyshire’s chase began shakily as pace and movement tested the top order. Matthew Potts and Brydon Carse troubled the openers, and Potts and Will Rhodes combined across the innings to take wickets that left Derbyshire 127 for six and trailing by 156. Stokes broke a stubborn partnership when his first ball induced Harry Came into a defensive prod that flew to third slip, and he later beat Caleb Jewell’s drive as Jewell fell for 28.

There was further concern when Stokes left the field feeling his lower left side, but he returned after Rhodes removed Wayne Madsen. Rhodes then tempted Matthew Montgomery into a drive for 28 before Potts struck late, removing Martin Andersson for 21 and Brooke Guest for one as the day ended with Durham firmly in the ascendant and Derbyshire facing a testing remainder of their first innings.
