Scott Bain has strengthened his case for a Scotland recall, after producing a man-of-the-match performance for Falkirk in a 1-1 draw with Dundee United. The 34-year-old produced a series of saves under heavy pressure, giving Sebastien Pocognoli a fresh option as the new head coach assembles his first squad for forthcoming Nations League fixtures.
Bain made eight saves during the match, denying attempts from Kevin Ciubotaru and Lyall Cameron, tipping Zidane Iqbal's effort away from the top corner, and keeping out a Neil Farrugia strike. He repelled nine on-target attempts from a total of 27 shots before Michael Forbes' stoppage-time header rescued a draw for United. The performance followed a mistake at Celtic Park the previous weekend, but otherwise underlined why Bain has remained in Scotland's thinking.
Bain has four international caps earned over the past eight years. He made his Scotland debut under Alex McLeish against Mexico in June 2018, and his most recent appearance came against Ivory Coast in a pre-World Cup friendly in March, although he was not included in the finals squad. Those facts frame his candidacy, combining prior international experience with current form.
Club records bolster the argument for selection. Bain has played 44 games for Falkirk, keeping 10 clean sheets. He previously registered 78 appearances for Celtic, "in which he kept the ball out of the net in half of those matches," and at Dundee posted 21 clean sheets in 124 games. Those figures present a consistent track record of reliability at club level.
Falkirk manager John McGlynn offered a clear endorsement. "I thought he was terrific," McGlynn said. "If you're looking for a goalkeeper who can play from the back and still make saves and bring composure and calmness to your defence, then I think Scott ticks all the boxes. So I have no doubt that the manager will be looking at him." Dundee United assistant Lee Sharp added, "Absolutely," and, "He had two or three really good saves in the second half."
Selection context matters. Craig Gordon is retired, and Angus Gunn and Liam Kelly lack recent first-team minutes, leaving Pocognoli with selection choices in goal. Bain's latest outing delivers momentum as the coach finalises his squad for the Nations League, and it gives the goalkeeper a reasonable expectation of being considered when selections are announced.
