Cook sent a memo to employees on his final day as CEO that framed the handoff as confidence in Ternus's product chops. Cook said he is "not leaving Apple," but moving out of the chief executive role, and praised Ternus by writing, "Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does." The memo stressed gratitude and Apple’s culture as the foundation of the company’s impact.
Ternus arrives as a proven hardware operator. He led Apple’s hardware engineering across the company’s device lineup and oversaw recent launches including the ultra-thin iPhone Air, the lower-cost MacBook Neo, and AirPods equipped with hearing health features. Those products are part of the record Cook cited when arguing for Ternus’s readiness to lead.
The move also underlines how Apple sees hardware in the coming technology cycle. The company accelerated releases of new Mac models this year, shipping the Mac mini and Mac Studio earlier than in prior years, a shift attributed to AI-driven demand for devices. Apple executives have tied device timing and chip development to broader enterprise and consumer AI needs, making hardware strategy central to competitive positioning.
Cook will remain at Apple as executive chairman. He wrote that he will continue handling political relationships, explicitly including those with President Trump and the Chinese government, and will remain active at Apple Park and on the road. On X, Cook added, "My title changes tomorrow, but the love I have for the Apple community never will."
The immediate consequence is clear, Cook’s endorsement positions Ternus as a product-first CEO and signals a company pivot toward device execution as a core advantage in the AI era. Apple’s public statements in the memo avoided detailed roadmaps for AI, services, regulation, or China, instead emphasizing values, culture, and product craft as the constants that will guide the next chapter under Ternus.
