Manuel Hernandez, the captain of a boat that capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday evening, has been charged after a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl died.
Hernandez, 46, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday and charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment, according to a New York Police Department spokesperson.
Police received a 911 call at about 10.25pm reporting an overturned vessel near Liberty Island, within the 1st Precinct.
The NYPD said its Harbor Unit, SCUBA Team and Aviation Unit responded to the scene. Divers later recovered the woman and baby from the water.
Both victims were taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn in critical condition, where they were pronounced dead. Their names have not been released.
A dozen other people were rescued from the vessel before police arrived and were later taken to hospitals, the spokesperson said.
