Builders renovating a house in east Flanders, Belgium, have discovered a hidden stash of gold bars and coins reportedly worth €9 million.

The workers found the hoard while drilling through the cellar walls to install new sewage pipes at the property earlier this week.

Police have moved the gold to a secure location and urged people not to visit the site in search of more treasure.

One of the builders, 18-year-old summer worker Kobe, said the team initially thought the coins were ordinary €1 pieces before noticing a gold nugget.

The property belongs to CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, a welfare-support charity based in Dendermonde.

Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the treasure. If no owner comes forward and the gold is not linked to criminal activity, it could be divided between the finders and the property owner.

The charity said it hoped the discovery could eventually support its work, while the builders also stand to benefit if the hoard remains unclaimed.
