Daniel Maldini will be without his driving licence after Milan city police confiscated it following a car collision in the city. The 24-year-old Italy international was found to be over the legal alcohol limit, the police said.
The midfielder was driving a Porsche Carrera 4 in the early hours of Sunday when his car collided with another vehicle. He was one of six people treated for minor injuries after the incident, and he was taken to hospital for precautionary checks before being released.
The crash came on a day when Maldini had played and scored for Cagliari, netting the winner in a 2-1 victory over Atalanta only hours earlier. Maldini is the son of Paolo Maldini and the grandson of Cesare Maldini, and he became the third generation of his family to represent Italy when he made his international debut against Israel in the Nations League in 2024. He has made six appearances for his country, the latest in September 2025.
Milan city police confirmed officers carried out breath tests at the scene. "Mr Maldini was administered a breathalyser test at the scene" and his "driving license was confiscated following a positive result", the force said. Initial readings recorded 0.91 grams per litre and a second measurement was 0.89 g/l, both above Italy's legal limit of 0.5 g/l.
Cagliari issued a statement saying the player had "undergone toxicological screening following recent media reports" and that "all tests returned negative results". The club added Maldini "will join the squad for training on Monday to prepare for the team's forthcoming fixtures."
The immediate practical outcomes are clear: Maldini has lost access to his driving licence after the police action, and he faces the administrative reality of a confiscated licence while the case is processed. The club expects him back with the squad for training, and further steps will depend on any subsequent procedures by the authorities or decisions by Cagliari.
