Instagram will reduce the reach of accounts that feature AI-generated people without clear disclosure. The platform said Monday it is renaming its existing "AI creator" label to "AI-generated profile" to make the disclosure easier to understand, and will penalize accounts that fail to use the new tag.
The new label is meant to signal that the person shown on a profile was generated or substantially created with AI. Instagram said creators who add the new label will not be penalized simply for featuring an AI-generated person, while creators who do not properly label an AI-generated profile could see their distribution limited.
Instagram also clarified the tag is not intended for routine uses of AI, such as editing photos, polishing captions, creating graphics, or making other creative tweaks. The change reflects user frustration with accounts that appear to belong to real people but are in fact synthetic. "As generative AI becomes a bigger part of how people create, we’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated," Instagram wrote. "They want to know when a profile features an AI-generated person."
The move follows growing concern about AI influencers and deceptive networks on social platforms. Earlier this year a Wired investigation uncovered a network of more than two dozen accounts that appeared to feature AI influencers, some of which reportedly reached out to users through direct messages to promote a dating app. In July the New York Times reported it had identified hundreds of AI-generated doctors, healers, and wellness personalities promoting supplements or making health claims to users.
Instagram's announcement also arrives after an earlier backlash over a tool that had allowed image generation using other people’s likenesses, a feature Meta removed after user objections. Last week Meta agreed to an $18 billion settlement with U.S. states over allegations tied to Facebook and Instagram's effects on children and teenagers. As part of that agreement Meta will introduce a default two-hour daily usage limit for teens across Facebook and Instagram, a "Night Mode" block, muted notifications during school hours, and other restrictions.
The immediate practical takeaway for creators is clear, Instagram said: apply the "AI-generated profile" label when a profile subject was created or substantially produced with AI, or risk reduced reach. The policy narrows who must disclose, while placing platforms and creators under greater pressure to make synthetic accounts visible to users.
