Exhibitors have extended screenings through Oct. 7 after the 40th anniversary rerelease of The Transformers: The Movie outperformed initial expectations at the box office.
The remastered 1986 feature opened as a one-week event beginning Sept. 17, presented by Hasbro under the Apology Tour banner. Over the weekend the rerelease climbed to No. 7 on the domestic chart, earning $3.1 million from 1,454 North American locations and topping $5 million worldwide as of Tuesday. The engagement was slated as a limited event but studios and cinemas added dates after fan turnout surpassed projections, with some venues that launched with Transformers Day scheduling additional showings through Oct. 7.
Fathom Entertainment vice president of marketing Shannah Miller framed the run as a collaboration. "We're thrilled at Fathom, but we also had high expectations," Miller said. "This has been an extraordinary partnership with Hasbro. They kicked off the Apology Tour in honor of the 40th anniversary of the film, which also then means the early death of Optimus Prime, 26 minutes into the film."
The rerelease packages the original feature with a 12-minute animated short titled Optimus Prime: Awakening, a theatrical exclusive that includes Peter Cullen's final performance; Cullen died last month at age 85. Those elements helped the anniversary run outperform several new releases playing on larger footprints. The rerelease topped Ethan Hawke's The Weight and Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom at the weekend box office despite those films playing on more screens.
At the distributor level, the rerelease now ranks as Fathom's No. 3 highest-grossing release of 2026 so far, behind The Amazing Digital Circus and the rerelease of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The result underlines continued demand for event cinema anchored in nostalgic properties and established franchises.
Directed by Nelson Shin, the original 1986 film underperformed on first release, earning less than $6 million domestically, but it has built a devoted following over decades. For now studios and exhibitors will monitor whether this anniversary momentum sustains further weeks or supports additional programming tied to the brand.
