Heated Rivalry will not appear at this year’s Emmy Awards because it is a fully financed Canadian production, and will be eligible instead for the International Emmys in New York in November.

The US ceremony’s nominations list nonetheless features a wide range of contenders. Shows singled out this year include Beef, Hacks, Pluribus and The Pitt, while Widow’s Bay, DTF St Louis, Slow Horses, The Bear and Abbott Elementary also compete across categories. Actors named among the nominees include Zendaya, Noah Wyle, Sarah Snook and Colman Domingo, with Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac and a string of British performers also in the running.
Best drama, the night’s most prominent prize, returns with last year’s winner The Pitt seeking to defend its title after a second series and carrying eight acting nominations, including one for Noah Wyle. Other drama nominees include Pluribus, Slow Horses, The Diplomat and the Game of Thrones prequel A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms. In comedy, Hacks is widely tipped to continue its strong Emmy run following its fifth season, with Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder both possible acting winners.
Jean Smart already holds four Emmys for Hacks, having won for each previous season, and another victory would bring her total to eight, tying the record held by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman. Possible challengers in the comedy field include Widow’s Bay, Shrinking, Abbott Elementary and Nobody Wants This. The second season of Beef is a contender in the limited or anthology series category and could deliver acting prizes for Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac, though it faces competition from All Her Fault, The Beast in Me and DTF St Louis, which performed strongly at the Creative Arts Emmys.
The series that captivated social feeds this year missed the US nominations because it lacks the US financing and partnerships the Academy requires for eligibility. Schitt’s Creek qualified in 2021 in part because of its US financial and broadcast links, including creator Dan Levy’s US-based production company, a contrast that explains this year’s outcome for the Canadian-financed drama.
Two other high-profile final seasons had a reduced presence: Stranger Things’ last run picked up seven nominations confined to technical categories, and Euphoria’s last season produced a single acting nod for former winner Zendaya.
The Academy has also reshaped the broadcast. The previous talk and scripted variety categories have been combined into a single outstanding variety series category, placing chat show hosts and topical variety programmes in direct competition. Several awards traditionally shown on the main telecast, such as supporting actor and actress in a limited series, were moved to the Creative Arts Emmys, and the number of trophies presented on the live night was cut from 26 to 19 to make room for more musical performances and sketches.
The ceremony begins at 17:00 PT / 20:00 ET on Monday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. US viewers can watch live on NBC or on Peacock, while the broadcast starts at 01:00 BST on Tuesday in the UK.
