Arsenal delivered an emphatic opening statement ahead of the new Premier League season, beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at the Principality Stadium.
The champions took control from the outset. Riccardo Calafiori scored after only 20 seconds, finishing a move started by Myles Lewis-Skelly, before Kai Havertz doubled the lead in the first half.
Martin Ødegaard completed the scoring after the break, capping a performance that suggested Arsenal’s title-winning side has added further depth and attacking quality.
Arsenal’s summer additions Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis featured prominently in a midfield and forward line that repeatedly troubled City. Guimarães impressed with his intensity and distribution, while Tzolis helped create Havertz’s goal alongside Ødegaard.
Ødegaard, whose previous campaign was affected by injury, looked central to Arsenal’s attacking play. After excelling for Norway at the World Cup, the captain was involved in the team’s best moves before scoring the third goal.
Lewis-Skelly also strengthened his case to remain a key part of Arteta’s plans. The teenager’s early pass for Calafiori set the tone, while his midfield partnership with Guimarães helped Arsenal control the contest.
For City, Enzo Maresca’s first meaningful match since replacing Pep Guardiola ended in a heavy defeat. The club are facing further changes in midfield, with Rodri set to join Barcelona and Bernardo Silva also departing.
City have been linked with Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández as they look to reinforce their options, but Arsenal’s depth was the clearest takeaway from the afternoon.
The Community Shield does not decide a season, but Arsenal began theirs with a convincing win over a major rival and an early reminder of the standard they will look to maintain.
