Google is tightening its oversight of Android apps by introducing new rules targeting software that quietly drains battery life. The move reflects a growing push across the industry to improve device longevity as users struggle to distinguish between aging hardware and apps that consume more power than they should.
The update is part of Google’s latest stability initiative for Android, which introduces stricter background process monitoring and energy use thresholds. If an app spikes far above expected battery consumption, the system will now surface warnings, restrict background behavior or, in severe cases, prompt users to force stop the app.
Developers will also face more pressure to optimise their applications. Google says its new enforcement tools will spot apps that run unnecessary background tasks, abuse location services or fail to follow established energy efficiency guidelines
