U.S. patent #12,728,722 outlines a system that requests small forward or reverse movements when a user applies force to the pop-up grab handle supplied with the tailgate step option on F-series trucks.

The filing describes how the handle serves as an external human-machine interface to trigger movement. Pushing with greater force could either make the truck travel a longer distance per command or increase the frequency of repeated equal-size nudges, the patent says. The same input method is described for reverse movement as well.

The patent anticipates safeguards to reduce accidental activation, calling for an input sequence that includes applying pressure and releasing, and it notes a dead-man switch could be incorporated to confirm the operator’s intent. The document treats the grab handle first as a handhold, and proposes controls layered on that existing hardware rather than a wholly separate device.

The filing sits alongside existing outside-the-vehicle convenience systems; Ford already offers Pro Trailer Backup Assist that operates from the cab. The move described in the patent targets a narrow practical task, such as inching a truck to dump stone, dirt, or mulch gradually without repeated trips into the cab.
