Handheld gamers gain a larger, brighter screen, but they will pay more for it. To mark two decades of its Republic of Gamers brand, ASUS has refreshed its flagship portable with a new look and a significant display upgrade, launching the ROG XBOX Ally X20 with a 7.4-inch Nebula HDR OLED.
The update keeps the original device’s layout and internal kit largely intact, but swaps the previous 7-inch IPS panel for an OLED that ASUS rates at 600 nits typical brightness and peaks of up to 1,400 nits. The switch to OLED should deliver noticeably better contrast and richer colors compared with the earlier IPS display.
Cosmetic changes are subtle yet distinct, the chassis now uses a translucent black shell with gold accents visible inside and out, while the button map, programmable paddles on the rear and magnetic analog sticks follow the prior design language. Core hardware remains the same, including the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of shared RAM, a 1TB SSD and an 80Whr battery.
Performance fans should find comfort in the unchanged internals, the original model already ranked among the most capable PC handhelds available. Still, rivals have pushed further into premium territory, the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is offered as a higher-end alternative with a heftier $1,800 price tag.
Price is the other headline here, ASUS is charging $1,300 for the X20, up from $1,000 for the first Ally model. Buyers who want a complete mobility kit can opt for a $2,499 bundle that pairs the handheld with ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses, a Dbrand Killswitch shell, a 68-watt power adapter and a custom Pelican Protector Case. The package raises the total spend above many standalone premium handhelds, yet the AR glasses may attract users who want an easier route to a larger virtual display without carrying a separate portable monitor.
ASUS notes the ROG XREAL R1 is built to work with other devices as well, supporting smartphones, laptops and even the Switch 2, so the bundle’s glasses are not limited to pairing only with the XBOX Ally X20. Pre-orders are available now directly from ASUS and through Best Buy, with official sales scheduled to begin on October 15.
