Users of the uBlock Origin adblocker are losing one of their browser options as Microsoft Edge ends support for the Manifest V2 extensions platform. This move is similar to Google Chrome's earlier decision to drop support for Manifest V2, which affected several ad blockers. According to Microsoft, only 58 extensions on the Edge Add-On Store, with any meaningful usage, still use Manifest V2, and only three of those are not available on the newer Manifest V3 platform.
As a result, users of these extensions can switch to alternative adblockers, such as uBlock Origin Lite, or use a different browser that still supports existing Manifest V2 extensions, like Opera. Opera has stated that it will continue to support these extensions "for as long as it's technically reasonable." Another option is to switch to a browser like Firefox. Microsoft plans to gradually turn off the remaining Manifest V2 extensions by default, starting this month, but users will be notified beforehand.
Microsoft aims to complete the transition of its consumer users to Manifest V3 extensions by the end of this year. The company will then shut down Manifest V2 extensions for enterprise users in early2027. Over the next few months, Manifest V2 extensions will be gradually turned off by default, with users being notified in advance and directed to recommended Manifest V3 versions where available. This change will start in the Canary, Dev, and Beta channels and will gradually broaden to Stable in the following months.
Managed devices will not be affected during the consumer rollout, but enterprise deprecation will follow in early 2027. As Microsoft makes this transition, users who rely on Manifest V2 extensions will need to find alternative solutions, either by switching to a different adblocker or using a browser that still supports these extensions.
