Sony’s A7R VI combines high-resolution imaging with the speed and flexibility traditionally associated with more specialised cameras.
The new flagship high-resolution camera features a 66.8-megapixel sensor, a new processor and a fully stacked design that supports full-resolution bursts of up to 30 frames per second without viewfinder blackout.
The camera can also use its electronic shutter for silent shooting, while its faster sensor reduces rolling-shutter effects. Sony has included 8.5 stops of in-body image stabilisation, dual USB-C ports and a new AI-based autofocus system.
The A7R VI produces 9984 x 6656 RAW files, with lossless compressed images averaging about 60MB each. A one-second burst at the camera’s maximum speed can therefore use about 1.8GB of storage.
Sony’s autofocus system supports continuous subject and eye tracking. The system is designed to make it easier to maintain focus across situations including portraits, sports, action and events.
The camera uses a new NP-SA100 battery, rather than the NP-FZ100 battery used by older Sony bodies. Its battery life is rated at more than 600 shots.
Sony’s A7R VI is priced at $4,500. It offers photographers a high-resolution option for landscapes, product photography, events, sports, street photography and other general-purpose work.
