New cast members Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter received only limited screen time in Saturday Night Live's Season 52 premiere, curbing their immediate opportunity to connect with the audience.
The two featured players were presented together in an early ensemble sketch that sent up a reality series called The Debut: Dream Academy and its hunt for a breakout girl group. The structure kept both performers inside a larger group conceit rather than offering distinct, recurring characters.
Belo-Osagie played Neelsa Boyce, a 17-year-old hopeful who says she wants to be a pop star after appearing as Young Nala in The Lion King on Broadway as a child. Her appearance was confined to the contest sequence and she did not reappear later in the episode.
Reiter's Margle was given the night’s livelier material. Margle explains she "only wear[s] flip flops because I keep passing out when I try to tie my shoes," turns up naked at a choreography rehearsal, and is paired with an eccentric contestant named Duff. The sketch reveals both were drafted into the competition after witnessing an on-screen executive, played by Ashley Padilla, commit a hit and run.
Margle also misunderstands the program’s premise, saying she thought it was a "show where you learned to control dreams." During a songwriting exercise she suggests the band name "Moose Knuckle" and contributes the line "Newton's Cradle, come and get it." The sketch finishes with Margle performing that number alongside Katseye, who was identified as The Debut Season 1 winner and served as the episode’s musical guest.
Reiter returned in the hour’s final sketch, which opens with host Jalen Brunson in a locker room. Kenan Thompson turns up as Brunson’s third-grade coach, Coach Dennis, who had a "really bad drinking problem," and who seeks a "small loan" while pitching Brunson to read his "Spider-Man-themed porno screenplay." Thompson introduces Reiter as Tonya, an immigrant he hopes to recruit for the shoot, and the scene ends with Kam Patterson, Reiter and Thompson stealing jerseys from the empty locker room.
That was the extent of both Belo-Osagie’s and Reiter’s airtime for the premiere. SNL often uses its Weekend Update segment to introduce new performers, but this episode devoted special portions of the show to panelists played by Jane Wickline as Dario Amodei and Jeremy Culhane as Tucker Carlson instead. The program also acknowledged recent departures Chloe Fineman and Martin Herlihy, and returned veterans Michael Che, Colin Jost, Mikey Day, Sarah Sherman, Marcello Hernández, James Austin Johnson, Andrew Dismukes, Ben Marshall, Tommy Brennan, and Veronika Slowikowska.
New episodes in the coming weeks include Dakota Johnson with Turnstile on October 3, Shane Gillis with Rosalía on October 10, and Inde Navarette with Gracie Abrams on October 31, offering future opportunities for the two featured players to receive larger showcases.
