John Malkovich has reinforced his reputation as Hollywood’s foremost menswear figure with a series of deliberate, costume-savvy looks at the Venice Film Festival while promoting Wild Horse Nine.
The 72-year-old actor arrived in Venice for the Martin McDonagh film and has used every public moment to stage distinct sartorial statements. A stylistial snapshot shared by Jeanne Yang showed Malkovich crossing the Grand Canal on a water taxi in a Hodakova shirt rigged with an extra pair of sleeves, which he draped across the boat’s lacquered roof. At a press conference he wore a white Bode suit with a retro printed shirt, a 1950s-inspired crossover tie, and kilim rug mules by Los Angeles dealer King Kennedy.
On the premiere carpet he chose a loose-fitting black wool peak lapel suit by Dior paired with an off-white silk shirt whose frilled collar referenced Elizabethan neckwear. The effect echoed the theatricality Malkovich has long favored, a throughline from his early screen persona to his current festival dressing.
Malkovich’s relationship with clothing is long established. He studied costuming in college, worked in the wardrobe department at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theater Company, and collected rare and vintage textiles before launching a label called Technobohemian in the early 2010s. He walked for Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons in 1989 and later appeared in Prada’s first menswear campaign in 1995, credentials that place him at the intersection of theater, archival textiles, and high fashion.

In a 2017 interview Malkovich said, "That’s all we have, is our view of the world and our style," and he added, "Style is the only constant in life."
