Snapchat is moving from online messaging toward helping users coordinate in-person gatherings, launching a feature suite called Snapchat Plans that lets people create, share and manage real-world events. The change gives users a dedicated place on the app for invitations, attendance tracking and event details, rather than relying on group chats or ad hoc messages.
With Snapchat Plans, a user can create an event by giving it a title, picking a date and time, and inviting up to 200 friends. Invitations are sent individually inside a one-on-one chat with each invited person. Guests respond with Going, Maybe, or Can’t Go, and hosts can see who’s attending, add more invitees and update event information after the plan is published.
The app adds a My Plans section to user profiles so people can quickly browse current, upcoming and past gatherings. When viewing a friend’s profile, users will also see events they share with that friend. Attendees can view the full guest list, change their RSVP at any time and receive a reminder one hour before the event starts. Snapchat says Snapchat Plans are private and invite-only.
Snapchat positions the feature as useful for a wide range of gatherings, from birthday celebrations and sporting events to study sessions and weekend hangouts. The company frames the launch as a response to lost details and buried messages, writing, “No more missed get-togethers because of buried messages, lost details, or forgetting to create an invitation. Snapchat Plans make it easier to organize these special in-person moments with your friends.”
The move sets Snapchat against dedicated event-invitation platforms such as Partiful, and follows other tech entrants into the space like Apple’s Invites app launched last year. The addition signals Snapchat’s intent to capture more of how younger users plan real-world social time by folding scheduling, RSVPs and reminders into the social experience they already use.
How quickly Snapchat Plans replaces separate invitation apps will depend on whether users adopt the integrated workflow and whether the feature scales to larger or public events, but the update embeds event planning directly into Snapchat’s chats and profiles from day one.
