The entertainment world loses Peter Cullen, the Canadian-born voice actor known for defining Optimus Prime and giving Eeyore his mournful cadence.
Cullen first performed Optimus Prime for the 1984 Transformers television series and later returned to the role across seven feature films released between 2007 and 2023, plus related spin-offs. He provided Eeyore’s voice on The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh from the late 1980s and contributed to numerous associated shows, films and games.
His range extended well beyond those two characters. Cullen voiced KARR, the nemesis to KITT on Knight Rider, created the clicking sounds for The Predator in the 1987 film, and supplied roars for King Kong in 1976. He also brought life to Monterey Jack in Chip ’n Dale Rescue Rangers and performed in animated series spanning Spider-Man, Donkey Kong, Alvin & the Chipmunks, Dungeons & Dragons, My Little Pony, Duck Tales and Gummi Bears.
He died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, a statement said. "Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide. "His family asks that you honour his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle'."
Cullen began his career in Canadian television and radio, later appearing regularly on programmes such as The Sonny & Cher Show before focusing on voice work. He said the voice he created for Optimus Prime drew on his older brother, a decorated US Marine and Vietnam War veteran, who advised him to portray the character as "a real hero" and said, "Don't go yelling and screaming. He's strong enough to be gentle." Cullen recalled using that tone in auditions and gave his brother a portion of his Optimus Prime earnings until his brother's death.
Industry recognition included a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for outstanding performer in an animated programme and a lifetime achievement award at the Children's & Family Emmy Awards in 2023. His death removes a distinctive presence from animation and franchise cinema; the characters he shaped will remain, but the original voice that carried them is gone.
