Miami Dade Fire Rescue said the Amazon Prime Air flight struck "multiple vehicles" on a roadway after it overshot the runway. The jet then caught fire, prompting a large emergency response.
More than 60 members of Miami Dade Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene to fight the blaze and secure the area. Officials confirmed five fatalities and five people injured in the crash, while crews worked to extinguish the fire and attend to those hurt.
Footage from the site showed the damaged cargo aircraft and the emergency operation around it. Miami International Airport closed all runways and issued a full ground stop following the incident, halting other arrivals and departures as responders managed the scene.
The sequence, a cargo flight arriving from San Juan, an overrun of the runway, collisions with vehicles and a subsequent fire, left a concentrated emergency effort on the ground and major disruption at the airport. Authorities remain on site as operations continue to focus on rescue, recovery and clearing the affected runway and roadways.
