Brandenburg state police said they had taken a 19-year-old German man into custody and described him as a prime suspect, but investigators have not released details on the weapon used or whether the suspect attended the Docemus private school.
Local reporting identified one victim as an 18-year-old female secondary student. The other was a 30-year-old man who died after attempting to intervene, according to regional media. Maz Online reported the arrested man is believed to have been the student’s former boyfriend.
Political figures expressed outrage. Ulrike Liedtke, the speaker of Brandenburg’s regional parliament, described the killing as a "cowardly femicide." She added, "The fact that we once again had to witness deadly violence against a woman fills me with deep sorrow and anger. I am shaken that a citizen who showed moral courage and wanted to help also lost his life in this terrible act." State premier Dietmar Woidke called the episode an "unimaginable act of violence."
School leadership moved quickly to limit further disruption while offering support. Michael Kunz, the school’s managing director, said classes would be cancelled on Friday but the campus would remain open to any student who wished to attend. "We want to provide them with a safe space where they can come together, talk to each other, and process what has happened," he said. He added that school leaders would make "a very careful" decision in the coming days about how normal school life should resume.
Authorities emphasised this was not a mass shooting, a clarification that left the weapon and motive subject to the ongoing investigation. Prosecutors and police will focus on confirming the suspect’s relationship to the victims and establishing a timeline for the attack.
The incident follows a separate school attack last month in southern Germany, in which two 13-year-old girls were seriously injured and a 16-year-old was arrested. That earlier episode has already heightened concern about violence in and around schools, and Friday’s deaths are likely to intensify calls for preventive measures and a review of safety protocols.
Police have not released a timetable for further announcements. Investigators will complete initial inquiries and next steps will include formal charges if evidence supports them, while the school community confronts immediate grief and the practical challenge of returning to class.
