Consumers gain a tri-fold smartphone with an integrated privacy screen as Huawei prepares to sell the Mate XT2, a device that combines a tri-panel fold with a built-in Privacy Display. The company says the phone will go on sale starting September 12.
The Mate XT2 folds inward on a redesigned hinge and measures 6.5 inches when closed. Opened fully, the internal display expands to 10.2 inches with a 3K resolution. Huawei notes the screen does not match the 16:10 aspect ratio used in its ultrawide Pura X model, but the phone runs the same HarmonyOS platform the company uses across its devices.
Under the hood Huawei fitted the Mate XT2 with a Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, which the company claims delivers 42 percent faster performance compared with the 2024 Mate XT. The phone carries four cameras: a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 40-megapixel ultra-wide, a 50-megapixel periscope with 3.5x optical zoom, and an eight-megapixel selfie camera housed behind the internal display.
Memory is consistent across models at 16GB, while storage and privacy display options determine the price. The base model starts at 19,999 yuan, roughly $2,980. A variant that includes 1TB of storage and the Privacy Display carries a price of at least 24,999 yuan, around $3,725, and a collector’s edition with 2TB is listed at 29,999 yuan, about $4,470.
Huawei’s rollout is expected to remain outside the United States, since the company is still deemed a national security risk, limiting the device’s availability in that market. Beyond the September 12 sales date, Huawei has not provided broader global availability windows.
The Mate XT2 merges features competitors have split between different products, putting a privacy-focused display into a tri-fold form factor and packing a flagship chip and high-end cameras into a very expensive package. The device will test whether buyers will pay premium sums for a combined tri-fold and privacy feature set in markets where Huawei can sell directly.
