Apple gains a chief executive known for serious high-performance car ownership, after John Ternus took the role less than a month ago.

Ternus reportedly owns one of just 77 modern Porsche 935s, the contemporary homage to the 1970s “Moby Dick.” The model is built from a heavily reworked 911 GT2 RS platform with a carbon-fiber body and a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter flat-six. Porsche rated the car at 700 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, and it weighs 3,042 pounds.

That specification is not purely for show. Ternus is said to take his 935 to Laguna Seca, where he has posted laps under 1:40. Those times place a private-enthusiast effort well into the quick range for a non-professional driver at the famed California circuit.

Porsche produced the 935 in strictly limited numbers, and when new the cars started at more than $800,000 at launch in 2018 before options and customisation. The package reads like a road-legal race car, and the performance figures reflect that intent rather than city commuting.

Beyond the 935, Ternus is reportedly a Formula 1 fan. There is no indication Apple plans to enter F1, and the company has not announced any motorsport projects tied to the executive’s hobbies. Still, Ternus’s tastes underscore the personal automotive interests at the top of one of the world’s largest tech firms.

For now the detail matters as a cultural note about Apple’s leadership rather than a business development. The most immediate consequence is symbolic: the company’s new chief executive is publicly associated with some of the most extreme road cars and with track driving at established circuits such as Laguna Seca.
