The sealed RM Sotheby's sale will test whether collectors are willing to pay beyond the advertised $6.22 million ceiling for an effectively unused Gordon Murray T.50. Chassis 47 left Gordon Murray Automotive's factory in 2024, carries 62 miles on the odometer, and has never been registered. RM Sotheby's lists a presale estimate of $5.68 million to $6.22 million and will run its Sealed format from September 23 to 30, 2026.
The car's condition and scarcity place it in a different market bracket from everyday examples. The T.50 originally sold by allocation when it launched, with buyers in August 2020 paying £2.36 million, roughly $3 million at the time. Public auction evidence for the model's ceiling is limited but significant: chassis 009 fetched $8,035,000 in April 2023, the clearest headline benchmark for top valuation so far.
RM Sotheby's director of private sales Harvey Stanley emphasised rarity and specification as drivers of interest, saying, "All T.50s are unique, but this one is extra special, and not only because of the number 47 connection. It is unregistered, undriven by the owner, and has an amazing specification." His remark underlines why consignors and bidders often treat nearly new examples differently from regularly used cars.
The T.50’s engineering and driver-focused layout are central to its collector appeal. It uses a 3.9-liter naturally aspirated Cosworth V12 producing 654 hp and revving to 12,100 rpm, with no turbocharging or electrical assistance. Gordon Murray Automotive cites a curb weight under 2,200 pounds, a 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds, a top speed of 226 mph, and a three-seat cabin that places the driver in the centre, a detail drawn from the McLaren F1 lineage.
Because RM Sotheby's Sealed format keeps bids and the final price confidential, the sale will not create the public theatre of a live auction and will limit immediate comparisons with chassis 009. The result will therefore leave the wider collector market dependent on private reporting or subsequent sales to confirm whether an essentially new T.50 commands premiums above both its original list and prior public highs.
